MAWF joins DepEd - Laoag in arts workshop launch

Art teachers of Laoag City public elementary schools are sure to have a new set of aesthetic skills and renewed creativity in teaching art to their students after the successful launch of a Training-Workshop series at the Roque B. Ablan Elementary School last July 10. Organized by the Department of Education – Division of Laoag City, the training-workshop offers topics covering the Filipino cultural heritage in the form of music, dance, theatre and visual arts.

This four-weekend training-workshop is also supported by genuine, award-winning local artists. A trio from the Maharlika Artists and Writers Federation (MAWF) started the first day of the workshop. Isagani Ibarra, a singer-songwriter from Pampanga, perhaps best known for the songs he wrote with and for the band Asin, presented the MAWF Sunrise Festival to the audience, comprised of more than 30 Musika Sining at Edukasyon sa Pagpapalakas ng Katawan (MSEPK) teachers. The MAWF Sunrise Festival is an annual multifaceted arts festival which is held in different regions in the country. This year, the 7th Sunrise Festival will be held in Laoag City on November 24-28. After Ibarra’s presentation, he went on to sing “Singising”, a song he made after being inspired by his recent return to Laoag City, his birthplace.

Another MAWF member, Florence Cinco, wowed the crowd with a video presentation of his artwork: mixed-media sculptures. The Western Samar native also demonstrated making a painting from melted crayons. Finally, Alaric Yanos, a photographer from Laoag and a MAWF Sunrise Festival coordinator, shared the “Top Ten Tips for better photos”.

The rest of the workshop topics were then presented by Laoag City teachers who were trained during the Regional Art Workshops held in Nueva Ecija in 2008, and in Laoag last year.
